Council of the EU

PenalNet has been presented in the Headquarters of the Council of the EU in Brussels with the objective to explain the project to the e--Justice Working Party of the Council, which is in charge of establishing the contents of the future European e-Justice website. The representatives of the Member States in the e--Justice Working Party of the Council showed their interest in PenalNet and its capacities, underlining the importance of using PenalNet as inspiration in the forthcoming debates on European e-Justice. At the end of the meeting, the chairman of the e--Justice Working Party, Mr. Paulino Pereira, expressed that “PenalNet shows that the e-Justice is not the future, but the present”.

PenalNet, a pioneering project based on secure e-communications for lawyers, is financed by the European Commission and is being developed by the Bar Councils of Bucharest/Romania, France, Hungary, Italy and Spain.

PenalNet are available in six languages in www.penalnet.eu

The presentation of PenalNet in the Council came after an event where the project was presented to a delegation of several European deputies of the Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament. This political recognition is a value added to PenalNet which is cooperating with organisations as the European eID Observatory, Semic.eu, and e-practice.eu that awarded PenalNet with the “Editor´s choice 2008”.

Currently, the Bar Councils of PenalNet are selecting the lawyers who will participate in PenalNet. The next step of the project is to include PenalNet in the European e-Justice website as well as to enlarge PenalNet to other Member States. The president of CCBE, Mr. José María Davó Fernández, has pointed out the importance of this project which is providing the European professional card to the selected lawyers.

The presentations on PenalNet will continue in the forthcoming months in events such the seminar “Towards a European on-line Justice” that the Spanish Presidency of the EU and the European Commission organised recently (19th and 20th of April).
